DaDancing at the George at Hubberholme during the Dales Tour, 2000 |
Despite fears expressed in some quarters recently, Morris dancing is alive and well. With over 800 clubs and groups worldwide it is clearly not on the point of extinction. Not only is it being preserved: it is also evolving. New interpretations of old dances are presented; new dances are developed; and Morris continues to become more diverse year by year. At the same time, some clubs prefer to stick to the faithful re-creation of the dances as recorded and published by Cecil Sharp and others early in the 20th century. Leeds Morris Men do aim to be faithful to the sources in their performances but they also believe that Morris should be expected to continue evolving and developing as it has done for centuries. We hope Morris, and Leeds Morris Men, will still be alive, and that the club will be dancing, into the 22nd century.
