Leeds Morris Men welcome you to their website!

Part of our English Cultural heritage............

For almost 60 years Leeds Morris Men have been bringing the Morris Dances of the Cotswold villages of England to the residents of West Yorkshire. This website provides a snapshot of our contribution, past and present, to the preservation and development of this rich element of England's ethno-cultural heritage.

Within these pages you will find details of (and photographs illustrating):

    • the club's history
    • past and present activities
    • the dances we perform
    • times and places where you may be able to see us dancing.

DaDancing in the rain at Clayton, December 2007

Despite fears expressed in some quarters recently, Morris dancing is alive and well. With over 800 clubs and groups worldwide it is clearly not on the point of extinction. Not only is it being preserved: it is also evolving. New interpretations of old dances are presented; new dances are developed; and Morris continues to become more diverse year by year. At the same time, some clubs prefer to stick to the faithful re-creation of the dances as recorded and published by Cecil Sharp and others early in the 20th century.

Leeds Morris Men do aim to be faithful to the sources in their performances but they also believe that Morris should be expected to continue evolving and developing as it has done for centuries.

We hope Morris, and Leeds Morris Men, will still be alive, and that the club will be dancing, into the 22nd century.
